If you've lived in Central Florida for any length of time, you know the brutal truth: mosquito season never really ends here. While residents of colder states can look forward to a few months of mosquito-free outdoor living, Florida homeowners and businesses face mosquito pressure 365 days a year.
Why Florida Is Different
Mosquitoes need two things to thrive: warm temperatures and standing water. Central Florida delivers both in abundance, year-round. Our average winter temperatures rarely drop low enough for mosquito populations to crash the way they do in northern climates. And Florida's frequent rainfall, we're one of the wettest states in the country, creates endless breeding habitat.
A female mosquito needs as little as half an inch of standing water to lay eggs. That means birdbaths, clogged gutters, plant saucers, tire swings, tarps, and even puddles in your yard can all be active breeding sites. After Florida's frequent afternoon thunderstorms, new standing water appears across the landscape within hours, and mosquitoes can develop from egg to adult in as little as 7–10 days.
Florida Mosquitoes and Disease
Beyond being a nuisance, mosquitoes in Florida carry real public health risks. Species active in Central Florida include vectors for West Nile virus, Eastern equine encephalitis, and, in outbreak conditions. Zika and dengue. The Florida Department of Health tracks mosquito-borne illness cases annually, and Central Florida regularly appears in those reports.
What Doesn't Work
Before we talk about solutions, it's worth addressing what doesn't work:
- Citronella candles: Provide minimal protection in a very small area. Essentially ineffective outdoors in any breeze.
- Bug zappers: Kill many insects, but mosquitoes are not strongly attracted to UV light. Most mosquitoes killed by zappers are harmless species.
- Ultrasonic devices: No credible scientific evidence of effectiveness against mosquitoes.
- One-time spraying without source reduction: Adult mosquitoes treated today are replaced by new adults emerging from nearby water sources within days.
What Actually Works
Effective mosquito control requires addressing both adult mosquitoes and the breeding sources that produce the next generation:
Source reduction: Eliminate or treat standing water around your property. Dump, drain, or treat any containers that hold water. This is the single most impactful step a homeowner can take.
Targeted adult mosquito treatments: Professional application to vegetation, shrubs, and resting areas where adult mosquitoes harbor during the day significantly reduces adult populations on your property.
Larviciding: Treat standing water that can't be eliminated with larval mosquito treatments to prevent development before adults emerge.
Regular service: Because mosquito populations recover quickly in Florida's climate, effective control requires scheduled, recurring treatment, not a one-time application.
